As Chair of Educational Activities for IEEE Region 6, I’d like to let you know about several New Educational Initiatives that I’ve been working on in Los Angeles County and Orange County that, with your help, I’d like to spread throughout our region and to other IEEE regions:
New Educational and Public Outreach Initiatives:
- Community Tech Cafés;
- ToolBox Training Labs; and
- Joint Program & Job Placement Training Centers.
The Kickoff Event for announcing these new initiatives will be held on Oct. 14th, 2015, at Los Angeles Southwest College’s new School of Career & Technical Education. The theme is “from Apollo 11’s Laser-Ranging Experiment to STEM, CTE and Community Education.”

Public Events and Educational Initiatives in Region 6:
Recall that IEEE Educational Activities include professional and student activities for our own members — as well as cross-disciplinary outreach programs for non-members, members of other professional associations, and the general public. Thus, in order to serve our mission of Advancing Technology for Humanity we need to expand our community outreach programs for the public at large, whether or not some of those folks someday decide to join IEEE.
NEW INITIATIVE #1:
- Community Tech Cafés (CTC)
In order to extend our informal educational activities to non-members — young or old, amateur or expert — I’ve launched the Community Tech Café initiative. The idea is to create exciting science & engineering presentations that are of interest to the general public, especially high-school, community college and university students who represent the very next generation of up-and-coming technology professionals. Parents, teachers, community members and other professionals are welcome at these Community Tech Cafés, too!

“From Apollo 11’s Laser-Ranging Experiment to STEM, CTE and Community Education”
At the inaugural Community Tech Café event our keynote speaker will be Hildreth “Hal” Walker Jr. — Hal Walker was the field operations manager for the Apollo 11 Lunar Laser-Ranging Experiment (LURE), and the very man who in 1969 fired a high-powered ruby crystal laser from Lick Observatory during that mission to bounce off retro-reflectors placed on the moon by Buzz Aldrin, thus accurately measuring the earth-moon distance for the first time.
Hal will be our keynote speaker with a presentation on the historical significance of the LURE project. Hal and his wife Dr. Bettye Walker will be our honored guests at the event and participate in a panel discussion held in the new School of Career & Technical Education at Los Angeles Southwest College. We’ll also be joined via Skype by John Moore, NSF Einstein Fellow, GLOBE Distinguished Fellow, and previous member of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science & Technology (PCAST).
