Unconventional Computer Arithmetic for Emerging Applications and Technologies
Leonel Sousa
 9 July 2020
11:00 am ET

Arithmetic plays a major role in computing performance and efficiency. It is challenging to build platforms, ranging from embedded devices to high performance computers, supported on traditional binary arithmetic and silicon-based technologies that meet the requirements of today’s applications. In this talk, the state-of-the-art of non-conventional computer arithmetic is presented, considering alternative computing models and emerging technologies. It provides comprehensive overview of logarithmic and residue number systems, hyperdimensional and stochastic computing, as well as arithmetic for DNA-based computing. And focuses nanotechnologies and applications in emergent domains, such as deep learning and post-quantum cryptography.

Smart and Circular Cities: Status, Trends and Opportunities
Dimitrios Serpanos
16 July 2020
6:00 am ET

The worldwide population growth coupled with its attraction to cities leads to the development and growth of mega-cities around the world. Their sustainability in the context of the international economic growth and the changing physical environment and climate requires new approaches to operation, policy and governance, which account for new economic models, management methods and technologies. The need of smart and circular cities leads to the development of new technologies, their integration and management coupled with effective policies and governance to achieve goals of effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability.

In this webinar, we introduce the concepts of smart and circular cities as well as current efforts and projects internationally.  We present current goals and priorities as well as their directions, and we identify trends, challenges and opportunities. We address issues of policy and governance in addition to technology that enables smart infrastructures and services.

Lead Yourself First
Adam Schmidt
 22 July 2020
12:00 pm ET

This webinar focuses on leading-self, the first step in leader development. It begins with an overview of key factors in self-leadership such as time-management, self and social-emotional intelligence, and professional presence. This introduction to leadership illustrates how each of these topics prepares one to take the next step in leadership – leading others. Participants can expect to walk away with a better understanding of how to structure their own leadership development goals.

Transforming Health Care Through AI Revolutions
Ram D. Sriram
27 July 2020
12:30 pm ET

The health care enterprise involves many different stakeholders —  consumers, health care professionals and providers, researchers, and insurers. AI will play an important role in many tasks that these stakeholders undertake. These include: image diagnostics, medical decision making, prior authorization, drug design, nutrition advisor, patient scheduling, etc.. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is an agency of the United States Government. NIST’s mission is to generally strengthen the U.S. economy and improve the quality of life by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards. The U.S. President’s Executive Order on AI (see https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/accelerating-americas-leadership-in-artificial-intelligence/) calls for NIST to lead the development of appropriate technical standards for reliable, robust, trustworthy, secure, portable, and interoperable AI systems. I will discuss relevant AI thrusts at NIST on health care informatics, focusing on the use of machine learning, knowledge representation and natural language processing. I will also discuss the need for explanations in AI systems (XAI) and current state of the art in medical XAI.

Panel Discussion:
Computing Lessons from COVID-19
Panelists: Stephen J. Andriole, Sridhar Deenadayalan,
Dejan S. Milojicic, and Gandhi Sivakumar
Moderator: San Murugesan
30 July 2020
6:00 pm ET

Computing was not spared from the COVID-19 pandemic. Unique challenges to computing quickly surfaced as the virus spread across the world. What did we learn? How should we prepare for the next global crisis?

COVID-19 accelerated and extended the digital transformation of almost every aspect of our personal and professional lives. This led to sudden surges in the demand for computing resources, especially the digital infrastructure that powers transactions and communications.

How did the computing industry respond to the surge in workload and computing resources? Was the demand for new services satisfied? How robust and resilient was the infrastructure? What were the major challenges and issues, and how were they resolved? What can we learn from this crisis? How should we prepare our computing systems and the infrastructure on which they ride for the next global crisis? Which areas need further research and development – and investment?

The panellists will address these and other critical questions, share their insights and suggest some changes.  Participants will also be invited to share their experiences, perspectives and recommendations.
