Speaker:

John M. Cioffi, Professor Emeritus, Dept of EE, Stanford University

Chairman and CEO, ASSIA Inc. & Chairman, PhyTunes Inc.

Abstract:

Spectrum regulation challenges grow for both unlicensed (e.g., Wi-Fi) and licensed (e.g., cellular) opportunities, particularly those created by 10’s to 100’s of billions of connected, communicating devices. Dynamic, cognitive solutions just begin to find field use and initiate the inevitable march towards increasingly artificially intelligent allocation of spectra and space. This talk reviews some multiuser fundamentals, their complexity of solution, and how they may find future application to magnify spectral efficiency by orders of magnitude.

About the Speaker:

John M. Cioffi – Illinois-BSEE: 1978, Stanford-PhDEE: 1984; Prof. EE, Stanford, 1986-present, now recalled emeritus. Founder Amati 1991 (1997 purchased by TI); Chairman and CEO ASSIA Inc. Cioffi’s specific interests are in the area of high-performance digital transmission. Awards include IEEE AG Bell (2010), Kirchmayer (2014) and Millennium Medals; Member Internet (2014) and Consumer-Electronics (2018) Halls of Fame; Marconi Fellow (2006); Member, US National (2001) and UK Royal (2009) Engineering Academies. Has served over a dozen boards of director PhyTunes (Chairman), Marconi Society (Vice-Chairman), Tinoq, and AltoBeam. 800+ papers and 150+ heavily licensed patents.

Speaker:

Ruksana Azhu Valappil, PhD

Founder, CEO, NEEV Health

Abstract:

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the Social determinants of health (SDOH) as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. They include factors like access to healthcare, education, community context, socioeconomic status, neighborhood and physical environment etc. Up to 60% of a person’s health is determinant by SDOH. The good news is that today’s digital tools make it easier to incorporate SDOH into patient and population health, thus improving health and reducing health disparities.

In this talk we will look at the importance of SDOH in Health AI solutions and the key considerations for integrating them in any AI model. This will include best practices, governance and ethics considerations that will help in the creation of a robust, sustainable health AI solution. I will demonstrate the impact of incorporating SDOH and the pitfalls of not doing so with a use case pertinent to the current global health scenario – that of the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the Speaker:

Ruksana is a healthcare AI, ethics and sustainability advisor, neuroscientist, social entrepreneur and a purpose driven leader. As the founder of NEEV Health, she loves to help digital health teams implement ethical and trustworthy AI solutions that mitigates bias, incorporates transparency and is regulatory compliant. As an advisor and consultant, she brings her passion for equitable healthcare, research rigor, analytical skills and a collaborative approach to help build ethical AI for digital health. She has led cross functional teams, organizations and serves on several board of directors. A founding member of WeTheChange, a not-for-profit coalition of 900+ mission driven women CEOs and allies aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She is the Director and co-leads the organization running operations, including governance, finance and partnerships. As a firm believer in public service, she serves as a commissioner on the newly created Hospital Supplier Diversity Commission at California Department of Health Care Access and Information. As an advocate for empowering women and a firm believer in integrating business with social responsibility, she runs her social enterprise, NEEV Lifestyle, as a California Benefit Corporation and a Certified B Corp. Ruksana earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering and holds a BS in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
