New Hardware Market Directions with 5G and Edge Computing

August 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:10 pm

The equilibrium of wireless connectivity and hardware capabilities has been upended by the arrival of 5G and enabling technologies like edge computing and serverless architecture. The question "what will you do with 5G?" is usually met with blank stares -- and for good reason. Our existing mobile devices were made for a 4G world, and OEM manufacturers are slowly waking up to that fact. New technologies powered by next-gen wireless connectivity are poised to spark a revolution with respect to…

SusTech Talk: Resilient Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy Systems

August 16 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

This talk will present integration of nuclear-renewable to support energy infrastrutures. Different coupling mechanisms will be presented to support different installtions and user requirements. Design and operation strategies and different technologies will be illsutrated to deploy nuclear-renewable hybrid energy systems and their use for different applications in city, urban, and remote communities. Performance measures are proposed to evaluate different strategies. The talk will include techno-economic evaluation of interconnected nuclear-renewable micro hybrid energy systems with combined heat and power, and their…

Expanding Decarbonization Beyond The Grid

August 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Apex Clean Energy’s mission—to accelerate the shift to clean energy—has remained constant since its founding. But the pace of that acceleration, both within Apex and by the rest of the world, has rapidly changed. Countries, companies, and consumers are demanding decarbonization at every level of the global economy—including some of the most carbon-intensive industrial sectors, which will require gigawatts of clean energy to create a new generation of green fuels at scale. As the market for decarbonization explodes, Apex is…

Limitations of AI Systems with Respect to Explainability, Interpretability, Fairness, Ethics, and Causality

August 17 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Today there are more than fifty domains in which AI systems perform at least as well as humans, and there are hundreds more where they are helping humans in making better decisions. However, current AI systems suffer from several debilitating limitations. For example, even the well-trained deep learning networks are often not robust and can recognize random images having perturbed patterns with over 99% confidence (such as a king penguin or a starfish). Medical doctors make mistakes too but by…

Inertial+, the Once and Future Navigation System

Since their invention shortly after World War II, inertial navigation systems have proven to be indispensable in the aerospace industry. They are immune to jamming and provide position, velocity and attitude with low noise, high data rates and low data latencies. Since the 1960s, the long-term drift inherent in any inertial system has typically been corrected through the integration of an external aiding source via an extended Kalman filter. Aiding sources have varied over the decades and, although GNSS is…
